Stitches

A surgical suture, commonly known as stitches is a medical procedure that is used to hold the body tissues together, post an injury or surgery. This usually involves using a needle with an attached thread. Numerous shapes, sizes and other thread materials have developed over time; and most surgeons, dentists, physicians, eye doctors, and professional nurses and other trained nursing personnel engage in suturing. Once the suturing is done, surgical knots are used to secure the sutures. At TEATREE Healthcare we understand the importance of suturing for injuries and surgeries. Therefore, we provide you with a broad range of services, including suturing that is held in our treatment rooms. Thus, making you feel more comfortable during the procedure.

Everybody has experienced skinned knees, puncture wounds, small cuts or animal scratches once in their lifetime. And, while most of the minor lacerations heal without medical interventions, some injuries need stitches or other types of treatment to ensure proper healing. But how can you tell whether the injury needs home treatment or stitches? Given below are some signs which show that a cut may require an emergency department visit for suturing:

  • If your wound that is deep enough to expose the yellow subcutaneous fatty tissues or the dermis.
  • If the injury is located across a joint. In such cases, you may also have damaged nerves, ligaments, or tendons.
  • If your wound is gaping open, such that you can’t use gentle pressure to press or hold the edges together.
  • If you have an animal or human bite. Here, you may need a tetanus booster shot, stitches as well as oral antibiotics.
  • If your injury is a result of a foreign object cutting the area.
  • If your injury was caused by a contaminated, dirty or a rusty object.
  • If your injury is due to a powerful impact from a penetrating object such as a bullet.
  • If your injury is profusely bleeding and the flow of blood refuses to slow down.
  • If your injury is located in a delicate area. For example, the face or neck.
  • If your injury is on or around the genital area.

If you experience such injuries or wounds and feel that you may need stitches, it is advisable to visit your doctor as soon as possible. This will help in immediate care for the wound, resulting in a healthy recovery.
