What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped ‘cap’ that is used to cover a tooth. A dental crown is used to revive the strength, size and shape of the tooth. They help improve the appearance of your natural teeth and can brighten your smile.
When is a Dental Crown required?
A dental crown procedure could be needed in the following situations:
- Post root canal treatment
- To act as an anchor for a bridge replacing a missing tooth
- To cover a dental implant
- To cover discolored or worn teeth
- To support a large filling
- To prevent further fracturing or cracking of a tooth

At TEATREE Healthcare, our expert dentists have the necessary expertise and infrastructure to create a crown suitable for your needs. Before a crown of the tooth can be made, we reduce the tooth in size so that the crown fits over it properly. Once the tooth is reduced, we take an impression to provide an exact mould for the crown for that particular tooth. Using this impression, we prepare the crown in the dental lab using a suitable material depending on its placement. Meanwhile, a temporary crown is placed to cover the prepared tooth. Once the permanent crown is ready, we remove the temporary crown and affix the new one.
At TEATREE Healthcare’s Dentistry Centre, we fabricate all types of permanent and temporary crowns in-house. These include:
Stainless steel – These are prefabricated crowns used on permanent teeth, only as a temporary measure. This crown helps protect the tooth while a permanent crown is fabricated from another material. This type of crown is predominantly used for children.
Resin – These crowns are more affordable than other types. However, they wear down over time and are more prone to fractures.
Metals – Metal alloys such as gold, palladium, nickel or chromium may be used to create teeth crowns. These crowns withstand chewing and biting well, rarely chip or break and are also long-lasting. The only disadvantage of these crowns is their colour. They are ideal for out-of-sight molars.
Porcelain fused to metal – These crowns look like normal teeth. However, there is a chance of them chipping or breaking. These crowns are an ideal option for front or back teeth.
All-ceramic or all-porcelain – These crowns provide a better natural colour match than all other crown types and are more suitable for people with metal allergies. However, they are not very strong and wear down more easily. These crowns are the ideal choice for front teeth.
Zirconia or milled – These are digitally constructed using specific software and hardware and can be created in a single visit. These crowns do not need any impression, and there is no need for a temporary crown.
