Elevation of blood pressure (BP) to abnormal levels is called hypertension. It is estimated that about one in every three urbanites and one in four rural people suffer from hypertension in India . Even more alarming is the fact that only 50% of people with hypertension are aware of their condition. In some communities, the awareness is as low as 10%.

At TEATREE Hospital’s our blood pressure specialists focus on minimizing the chances of occurrence or at least delaying the occurrence of blood pressure. For those who are already hypertensive, the aim is to reduce the incidence of related complications.

What is Hypertension?
Simply put, an increase in blood pressure to irregular levels is called Hypertension. This occurs due to stiffening of the arteries and imbalance in the chemicals responsible for maintaining blood pressure within the normal range. There are two kinds of hypertension:

Primary Hypertension – This is the most common type of hypertension accounting for more than 95% of cases. The onset of primary hypertension is very gradual and does not have any visible symptoms. The cause of this kind of hypertension is unknown. It occurs as the arteries start getting stiff and kidneys are unable to maintain optimal blood pressure. Primary hypertension develops with age.

Secondary Hypertension – In this type of hypertension, the cause of elevation in blood pressure is known. Several diseases such as tumor’s like pheochromocytoma, adrenal adenoma, arterial diseases like renal artery stenosis and coarctation of aorta can lead to hypertension. In certain cases, treatment of the underlying condition could cure secondary hypertension. Some signs that indicate the presence of secondary hypertension are a sudden worsening of blood pressure in an older person, onset of hypertension at a very young age, or episodic elevation of blood pressure associated with symptoms such as palpitation and sweating.
